Who band name meaning

Masterly mod band from Shepherd's Bush, London that, despite a drastic decline in the number of band members, managed to maintain their identity quite well.

Started as The High Numbers. Wherever Townshend and his men showed up the response to their first band name was a confused 'The who?'.

That was all over after they started calling themselves The Who – in response to that name at least no one said 'The high numbers?'
