(1970-1988; 1996-2002; 2010-2011, GB) – In the beginning this formation operated under the rather poor band name Daddy (1969-1970), but before long it was renamed Supertramp. The art rock Supertramp produced did not go down well with the critics, but the common people loved it; the band went from paper boy to millionaire.
Part of the title of a book by Welsh poet and writer William Henry Davies (1871-1940) was gratefully accepted for the benefit of a band name: The Autobiography of a Super-Tramp.
That Super-Tramp was writer Davies himself: the Welshman spent much of his life roaming all over the United States and Great Britain; the written account of his experiences drew a generous crowd, just like Supertramp’s music did.
