Daft Punk band name meaning

House duo from Paris that rose to prominence by the intriguing clip they made for their song Around The World.

Initially Daft Punk performed under the name Darlin' (after the Beach Boys song). After Darlin' had had devastating feedback from English music magazine Melody Maker (the editors described the music the band made as ‘a bunch of daft punk’), Darlin's reaction was far from daft: they turned the negative qualification into their new band name.

D-A-D band name meaning

With their band name they do not so much want to express that they have a grip on two guitar chords as they seek to avoid a quarrel with the almighty Walt Disney Company. The problem was that at its conception D-A-D was called Disneyland After Dark.

Before the current band name was adopted, Disneyland After Dark was successively called D.A.D., D•A•D and D:A:D – and we are not going to make a song and dance about this here now, period.

D-12 band name meaning

Group of hip hoppers from Detroit, Michigan, of which rapper Eminem, who later rose to great heights, was once part.

D-12 stands for Dirty Dozen (even though names as D-Twizzy, DTizzle and Detroit-Twelve occasionally count as well) and that is a bit odd for a party that consists of six men.

It starts to make sense once you know that at first the grander plan was to unite Detroit’s twelve most talented rappers in one group. Unfortunately it turned out to be impossible to complete the dozen without making major concessions to the quality of the formation. For this reason the group stuck to six men, each of them adopting an alter ego by way of compensation - after all, six times two equals twelve just as well.

The 'real' Dirty Dozen of course were the leading actors of the film of the same name by director Robert Aldrich (1967), starring among others Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine and Charles Bronson.
