Brainchild of singer / songwriter Jamie Stewart from San Jose, California, the only one of the company who managed to survive all personnel changes.
The name of the band, which mainly produces art rock and synth pop, is owed to a 1998 film, directed by actress Joan Chen, entitled Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl. Due to a number of political and sexually unwelcome scenes the film was banned in China. Xiu Xiu means something like 'Heavenly bath'.
According to Jamie Xiu Xiu was the saddest film he had ever seen.
